Complete the UW–Madison Graduate Application
Please read these steps carefully before submitting your application online.
Online application: The button below will bring you to the University of Wisconsin’s Graduate School Admissions website. This site provides information about UW–Madison, applying, funding and financial aid. When you are ready to begin the application, skip down to step 3 on the UW–Madison Graduate School Admissions page and click “Apply.”
If you do not already have a UW–Madison Graduate School Admissions account, click “Create an Account.” Once your account has been created, you will receive an email asking you to activate your account. Once activated, log in again.
- Fill out the first two sections, titled Personal Information and Citizenship.
- When you get to the third section, Program Select, choose the term you wish to start your studies and “Part Time.”
- Select Program 1 and enter “manufacturing” as your search term.
- Select “Manufacturing Systems Engineering MS – Manufacturing Engineering .”
- Complete the remaining sections of the application.
In order for us to view your application, please ensure you submit the following materials along with your application:
- Your resume/curriculum vitae
- An essay that describes your reasons for wanting to pursue graduate studies. Please address these topics in a one-page personal essay:
- Your interest in this program
- Your academic and professional preparedness for this program
- Any deficiencies in your application or information not presented elsewhere that you want the admissions committee to know about
- Your unofficial academic transcript(s)
- The contact information of two recommenders.
- Request references from professional and/or academic connections best equipped to address your strengths. Include your direct supervisor if appropriate.
- References will be asked to rank your skills and upload a recommendation letter.

- UW–Madison residency application (if applying as a non-resident of Wisconsin)
- A $75 application fee (plus $6 fee for international applicants)
If recommended for admission, arrange to have one copy of your undergraduate final official transcript sent directly from your school to the University of Wisconsin–Madison Graduate School. International applicants, please see graduate school requirements for country-specific information.
University of Wisconsin–Madison alumni do not need to request official transcripts.
While GRE scores aren’t required, we do recommend that you submit your scores if you’ve previously taken the exam.
Every applicant whose native language is not English, or whose undergraduate instruction was not in English, must provide an English proficiency test score. TOEFL scores must be submitted electronically via ETS. IELTS scores can be submitted electronically or by paper. Our office address is:

Your score will not be accepted if it is more than two years old from the start of your admission term. Country of citizenship does not exempt applicants from this requirement. Language of instruction at the college or university level and how recently the language instruction was taken are the determining factors in meeting this requirement.
Applicants are exempt if:
- English is the exclusive language of instruction at the undergraduate institution or you have earned a degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university not more than five years prior to the anticipated semester of enrollment; or
- you have completed at least two full-time semesters of graded coursework, not including ESL courses, in a U.S. college or university, or at an institution outside the U.S. where English is the exclusive language of instruction. Completion of graded coursework cannot be more than five years prior to the anticipated semester of enrollment.
